The Family Court Services and Mediation Division was established to assist divorcing parents to develop a Parenting Plan for their children through mediation, conduct Advisory Consultation assessments on custody and visitation issues, provide services to all paternity cases and mediate in abuse and neglect cases.

Mediation provides the opportunity for parents to keep control of decision making regarding their child in their own hands rather than turning important issues regarding their children over to a judge for decision making. The mediator does not tell the parents what to do with their children, but helps to facilitate communication, focus on the children, and explore possibilities. The mediation sessions are confidential and neither the parents nor the mediator may divulge information to the court that was acquired during the session. Sessions are scheduled Monday through Friday during regular court hours between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Parents usually attend two to three sessions lasting from one and a half to two hours each. A fee is charged for each mediation session which is based on a sliding scale.

The Information Session on Children and Separation is a one time two hour presentation held on the first and third Thursday of each month. It is focused on the needs of children whose parents live in separate households. Parental behaviors that place children the middle of their parentsí conflicts are discussed with an emphasis on approaches that parents can use to make a difficult situation work out better for their children. These sessions are free and open to the public. Parents do not need to register to attend. Children are not permitted to attend this session. The Information session must be attended before participating in mediation.
